Multi-Digit Multiplication and Long Division Practice

Right now, Track 4 is working hard on their multi-digit multiplication and long division. This is their first time ever working on problems that require this amount of work, and when you incorporate word problems and high level analytical thinking to the mix, these problems become downright difficult and rigorous.

The students are also struggling with pushing themselves past the problems that we assign for classwork and homework.

The bottom line is that the students need to practice, practice, practice. What do we mean?

1. The students have to know their math facts. We will work minimally on them here in class, but you can supplement at home with flash cards and printable online assessments. If you need help finding these, http://www.math-drills.com is a great little site that we use a lot.

2. They have to practice the old school algorithm in both Multiplication and Division. This is the tried and true method that we worked on as kids. Now, we DO work on other methods in school (area model & base 10 model), but both are pathways to the methods we use. The other methods actually make more sense, but in middle school, they’ll be working on the “regular” methods.

What does practice look like? It doesn’t have to take much time, but 2-4 problems a day would suffice. Repetition is key, as many mistakes are made in these problems because they haven’t formed the correct patterns in solving, or make basic multiplication problems because they haven’t learned their facts yet.

These skills are definitively necessary for math for the rest of their lives!!!

Have a phenomenal day!!!!

Grocery Store Activity 2013

Hello fantastic fifth graders! Keep working hard on those Grocery Store Activities! Make sure the you are creating balanced meals…and be specific!!!!

Here are some websites that can help you on your journey! The Lowe’s Foods and Harris Teeter links can give you specific prices from stores right here in Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina!!!! You can use any store that’s in the Triangle, and any coupon that works at those stores! Think outside the box!!!! Who can make balanced meals on the lowest budget…that will actually work!!!!!
