CROP-QVS–Opinion

During the third quarter, the students will have all five days and four nights of the school week to complete each of the seven-parts of the CROP-QVS. This is a very abbreviated version that we will be working on in the third quarter to help the students locate and identify these key items. In the fourth quarter, we will add depth and detail in our reading journals!

Here are two examples that we worked on in class on Monday, February 10.

Mighty Memoir All About Me Assignment

All About Me
Mighty Memoir Ivan

This is the packet for our first major project!!!

Each child will have four weeks to complete this. I’m not concerned about the photobook that they need to use. I’ve purchased them for kids in the past…and the ones that I have used have been between $1.00 and $3.00. If you would prefer not to spend any $$$ on a photo book, that’s fine. You can build one using construction paper, or card stock…or get creative!

Read the directions to find out what each page needs, or ask your child!!!

We have examples in Mr. Pete’s room if you need to see one!

Have a great day!!!

Reminder–Barnes & Noble at Hares: Friday, November 9th

This post was originally sent during track out: Mark your calendars now to joins us in celebration of the arts and reading at Barnes & Noble in Cary: November 9, 2012. The book fair will be open daily during regular business hours nation-wide. Events are planned, starting at 6:00 PM. The proceeds from this event will directly benefit various arts programs at HARES.

Herbert Akins will receive a percentage of in-store sales from customers who reference our book fair ID number: 10855484. This includes books, Nooks and accessories (great for Christmas and other holiday presents), music, videos, toys, magazines, cafe’ gift and consumable items, and all other merchandise except the purchase of ebooks, digital content, downloadable audiobooks, gift cards, text books, magazine subscriptions and items at cafes owned by Starbucks (the Starbucks cafe’ at the Cary location is company owned, so the items purchased there will be included in our sales). On-line purchases are included in the book fair! Online purchases can be made November 9-14. Our book fair is registered nationally, so friends and family can make purchases in their local Barnes & Noble on November 9 and still benefit Herbert Akins!

Several events will be planned to celebrate that night. Artwork will be displayed (and we have a bunch of fantastic artists), as well as a scavenger hunt, storytime (with some surprise readers…Okay…Mrs. Penland…not such a surprise), Curious George will be there, and the student choir will be performing!

Check out Barnes & Noble on the 9th for Fifth Grade Pride wish list items!

Thanks to Carolyn Nelson for spearheading this effort

Mr. Pete’s Reading Class!

****Attention Mr. Pete’s READING CLASS!****

This isn’t for every Pride Student, so make sure that your child is in Mr. Pete’s reading class during quarter two before making this purchase (of course, if you just want the book to read, that’s okay too, but you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get it!). Mr. Pete’s class will be reading Wednesday Wars as a whole group novel.

The title for our next novel study is Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt.  Pete reading students need a copy of this book by Monday, November 19th, 2012.  We will begin working with the novel on this day.  I prefer that the students own their own copy of the novel so that they can write notes in the book with my guidance.  It’s not necessary, but certainly helpful.  The students that check out or borrow novels can use sticky notes! You can order this book by sending money in to Mr. Pete so that Mrs. Nelson can pick it up. If you choose this option, money will need to be turned in by Friday, November 16th.

Here is the form: Our Next Novel–Wednesday Wars

Students will be bringing this form home tonight, but you know…in case they lose it!

THANKS!!!!
